Global trade will plunge by up to third in 2020

올해 세계 무역량, 최대 3분의 1 감소한다

GENEVA (AFP) – Global trade could plummet by a third this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the World Trade Organization said Wednesday, warning the deepest recession “of our lifetimes” could be on the horizon.

세계무역기구(WTO)는 “코로나바이러스의 세계적 대유행으로 올해 세계 무역이 3분의 1로 급감할 수 있다”며 우리 생애에 있어 최악의 불황이 닥쳐올 수 있다고 경고했다.

“COVID-19 has completely upended the global economy and international trade,” WTO chief Roberto Azevedo told reporters in a virtual briefing from Geneva.

호베르루 아제베두 WTO 사무총장은 제네바에서 가진 화상 브리핑에서 “코로나19가 세계 경제와 무역을 완전히 뒤집어놨다”고 말했다.

The global trade body was projecting that “trade in 2020 will fall steeply in every region of the world, and basically across all sectors of the economy,” he said.

아제베두 사무총장은 “WTO는 2020년 세계 전 지역, 모든 경제 분야의 무역량이 급격히 감소할 것으로 전망한다”고 전했다.

The WTO acknowledged that there was huge uncertainty around how the economic crisis around the pandemic, which has infected more than 1.4 million people globally and killed nearly 83,000, would unfold.

세계무역기구는 전 세계적으로 140만명 이상을 감염시키고 약 8만3,000명의 목숨을 앗아간 이 전염병을 둘러싼 경제 위기가 어떻게 전개될지에 대해 큰 불확실성이 존재한다는 것을 인정했다.

Stressing that the situation was first and foremost a health crises, Azevedo warned that “the unavoidable declines in trade and output will have painful consequences for households and businesses, on top of the human suffering caused by the disease itself.”

아제베두 사무총장은 무엇보다도 현 상황이 질병 위기라는 점을 강조하며 “무역량과 생산량의 불가피한 감소는 질병 자체로 인한 인간의 고통 외에도 가계와 기업에 고통스러운 결과를 초래할 것”이라고 경고했다.

WTO presented two scenarios that it deemed “plausible,” depending on how quickly the pandemic was conquered and the measures governments put in place to dampen the blow.

세계무역기구는 전염병이 얼마나 빨리 정복되는지, 정부가 피해를 줄이기 위해 어떤 조치들을 내놓는지에 따라 달라지는 두 가지 ‘타당한’ 시나리오를 제시했다.

“In an optimistic scenario, our economists see the volume of global merchandise trade falling by 13 percent this year compared to 2019,” Azevedo said.

아제베두 사무총장은 “우리의 경제학자들은 낙관적인 시나리오 하에 올해 세계 무역량이 2019년에 비해 13% 감소할 것으로 본다”고 설명했다.

That outlook points to a sharp drop in trade followed by a recovery starting in the second half of 2020.

이러한 전망은 2020년 하반기에 시작될 회복과 함께 올해 무역량의 급격한 감소를 암시한다.
